It has been a week here for the kind of wildlife that can tolerate sharing space with humans. A cooper's hawk turned up on Monday and proceeded to sit on a corner of our front stoop for about half an hour, wistfully listening to the family of crows that sometimes come to hang out in one of our backyard trees discuss their business. My folks are out of town this week, helping my grandfolks (my dad's parents) move to a flexible assisted living complex. This means sorting forty odd years worth of stuff, and deciding what to move to the new apartment, what to sort out amongst the siblings (Dad and his two sisters), what to throw out, and what to donate to charity. Yesterday I went walking down by the pond and surprised a young leopard frog! It was small, but bright green and its spots were dramatic. It skidded and leapt out in front of me and hung a hard right into the tall grass on the verge of the pond, where it disappeared.

I missed watering the garden before the sun got high today, so I went out to do it just after the sun had set, before it really got dark. The fireflies were out in the dark, and I could hear a small but loud "whiiiiiiirr." I'd just located the big dragonfly it was coming from, a slightly darker shape in the dim light reflecting off the small pond, ( Read more... )

...I think I just watched a woodpecker get shooed away from the suet feeder by a sparrow.

Admittedly, it was a european sparrow, so it was the same size as the woodpecker or even larger but.

Our crab apple is perhaps, getting a little too popular with the local birds.

A cooper's hawk dropped by last week too. With a rather different menu in mind than the little fruit, seed, and insect eaters.
